There’s nothing quite like that first drink after touching down in a new country. Whether it’s a celebratory cocktail at the beach, a refreshing soft drink by the pool, or a simple glass of water to rehydrate, that first sip often marks the official start of your adventure. We recently asked our Facebook community, What’s your go-to first drink when you land abroad? The responses were as varied as the destinations themselves. Here’s what you told us—and some of the stories behind your choices.

1. Cocktail – 22.4%

Unsurprisingly, cocktails topped our poll! With so many travellers heading to sun-drenched locations, a colourful, fruity drink is the perfect way to ease into holiday mode. Whether it’s a classic mojito, a piña colada, or something exotic from the local menu, cocktails scream “holiday vibes.” As one commenter put it: “There’s nothing like sipping on a margarita while overlooking the ocean—it’s my signal to officially relax.”

2. Beer/Lager – 20.9%

A close second was beer or lager, a universal favourite. For many, sampling the local brew is a must-do when arriving in a new country. Whether it’s a crisp lager in Germany, a craft beer in Belgium, or a light cerveza on a Spanish terrace, beer lovers know how to kick off their travels right. “The first thing I do when I land is find the nearest bar and order a local beer. It’s a great way to get a taste of the culture,” shared one enthusiastic traveller.

3. Water – 17.9%

Practical and essential, water secured the third spot. After a long-haul flight or a sprint through a bustling airport, it’s no wonder many of you prioritise hydration. While it might not seem as exciting as a cocktail or beer, it’s a smart choice to ensure you’re ready to make the most of your trip, especially after a long time travelling.

4. Spirit with Mixer

While this option didn’t claim a top-three spot, spirits paired with mixers still hold a special place in many travellers’ hearts. Whether it’s a rum and coke, a gin and tonic, or a vodka soda, this versatile category offers a little something for everyone. These drinks are perfect for those who want something stronger but still refreshing after a day of travel.

5. Fanta Lemon

Rounding out our list is a cult favourite among European travellers—Fanta Lemon. For many, this fizzy, citrusy delight is synonymous with summer holidays, especially in Mediterranean hotspots. Whether a young kid or an experienced traveller, Fanta Lemon is the go-to drink for many holidaymakers as soon as they step off the plane.

So, What’s Your Go-To?

It’s clear that the first drink abroad is more than just a beverage—it’s a ritual, a way to mark the start of your adventure. Whether you’re reaching for a cocktail, a cold beer, or a trusty bottle of water, that first sip often sets the tone for the trip ahead. What about you?
